Guidelines for Energy Conservation
Did you know that 71% of all electricity in the United State is consumed to power building operations (USGBC.org)? A big piece of that electricity is used to heat and cool buildings. Portland State Business Accelerator and Portland State University have a strong commitment to sustainability. One of the ways this is practiced is through green building operations. Please follow these building guidelines when setting your thermostat:
- Do NOT set the thermostat to HOLD at a specific temperature. This requires the heating and cooling systems to run at night when you office is not occupied.
- Keep all thermostats in your office on a similar program. If one area of your office is programmed to cool the office to 69 degrees and the other side of the office will heat to 69 degrees, the two zones will counteract each other and waste energy.
- Keep the thermostat within recommended temperature ranges (see chart above).
- Do not program the thermostat to heat or cool when people are not using you office. For example, do not set the thermostat to an occupied temperature on Saturday if employees in your company rarely work on Saturday. Please use temporary settings if employees occasionally come in on the weekend.
- Consider everyone in your office when you are setting the thermostat. Some people like warmer temperatures and some like colder temperatures. Find a temperature setting that is a compromise that takes into account different preferences.
- Consider wearing different clothes to make yourself more comfortable. If you find that you are too cold and the thermostat is set to 70 degrees, then maybe bring a sweater or layered clothing. If you are too hot and the thermostat is set to 71, then consider wearing short sleeves, shorts, or a skirt. Encourage other people in your office to do the same. Tell them why you think energy conservation is important.
